Multi scale analysis

 The science in SOLID integrates 3D experimental  movies and 3D simulations – on several length scales. This approach calls for new approaches to both neutron and X-ray imaging and materials modelling. At the same time we develop advanced data science tools to process and quantify the data, to combine the length scales and to extract the science.

a) A movie of the growth of 1500 grains in an Al sample (with orientations in color) was compared to 3D phase field simulations. b) Fitting ~1000 materials parameters an excellent match is obtained for the time evolution of the grains, as shown by one example.
